Neighborhood guide

Living in West Roxbury

West Roxbury is Boston's most suburban neighborhood, with tree-lined streets and a lively stretch of Centre Street full of restaurants, pubs and local shops. Its history runs deep: Brook Farm, the 1841 Transcendentalist community where Nathaniel Hawthorne lived, was here, and Bellevue Hill, at about 330 feet, is the highest point in Boston.

Millennium Park gives the neighborhood fields, trails, a canoe launch on the Charles River and a sweeping view of the skyline, and Stony Brook Reservation lies along its eastern edge. Commuter rail stops at West Roxbury, Highland and Bellevue, and the Orange Line at Forest Hills is a short drive or bus ride.

West Roxbury is mostly single-family homes, colonials, capes and Victorians on real lots, with condos near Centre Street. From 2015 to 2025, about 61% of residential sales were single families, 33% condos and 6% multi-families.
