Living in Medford

Medford is a river city with a long history and a young streak, thanks to Tufts University on its hill. Medford Square is the traditional center, with West Medford, Medford Hillside and South Medford each keeping their own character. The Royall House and Slave Quarters tells one of the region's most important colonial histories, and Amelia Earhart lived here in the 1920s.

The Mystic River winds through the city, lined with paths, and the Middlesex Fells Reservation covers the northern edge with miles of trails. Transit has improved sharply: the Green Line Extension reached Medford/Tufts in 2022, the Orange Line stops at Wellington, and commuter rail serves West Medford.

Medford's housing is largely single families and two-families, with a growing number of condos. From 2015 to 2025, about 46% of residential sales were single families, 39% condos and 15% multi-families.
