Living in Somerville

Somerville is one of the most densely settled cities in New England, and its squares, Davis, Union, Ball, Teele and Assembly, are full of independent restaurants, bars and music. Marshmallow Fluff was invented here in 1917, and Union Square still throws a festival in its honor every fall. On Prospect Hill, the Grand Union flag was raised on January 1, 1776.

The Somerville Community Path runs east to west through the city, and the Mystic River waterfront at Assembly Row adds parkland along the water. Transit is strong and getting stronger: the Red Line serves Davis, the Orange Line serves Assembly, and the Green Line Extension now reaches Union Square and Medford.

Somerville's housing is defined by two- and three-family homes, many converted to condos. From 2015 to 2025, about 65% of residential sales were condos, 24% multi-families and 11% single families.
