Newton calls itself the Garden City, and it is really a collection of thirteen villages, from Newton Centre and Newtonville to West Newton, Auburndale and Waban. Each village has its own center of shops and cafes, so daily errands stay close to home. Every April, Boston Marathon runners climb Heartbreak Hill along Commonwealth Avenue here.
The Charles River curves around three sides of the city, and parks like Crystal Lake, Cold Spring Park and Hemlock Gorge with its Echo Bridge are close at hand. The Green Line's D branch runs through several villages, and commuter rail stops at Newtonville and West Newton, with the Mass Pike close by.
Newton is mostly single-family homes, from Victorians and colonials to newer construction, alongside condos near the village centers. From 2015 to 2025, about 59% of residential sales were single families, 34% condos and 6% multi-families.
The Garden City: thirteen villages, each with its own center, and the Boston Marathon's Heartbreak Hill.
