Neighborhood guide

Living in Brookline

Brookline is its own town, bordered by Boston on three sides, with the feel of a city neighborhood and the services of a suburb. Coolidge Corner, Brookline Village and Washington Square each have their own shops and restaurants, and the Coolidge Corner Theatre has shown films since 1933. John F. Kennedy was born here, on Beals Street, and Frederick Law Olmsted made Brookline his home and office.

Olmsted's Emerald Necklace runs along the town's eastern edge through Olmsted Park and the Riverway, and Larz Anderson Park offers hilltop views and a skating rink. The Green Line's C and D branches run through town, with the B branch along its northern edge, making for an easy ride downtown or to the Longwood Medical Area.

Housing ranges from brick apartment buildings and brownstone condos near the Green Line to large single families on tree-lined streets farther south. From 2015 to 2025, about 74% of residential sales were condos, 22% single families and 4% multi-families.
