West Roxbury's Bridge Gets Built on the Weekends the Train Stops

When will the West Roxbury Parkway bridge actually reopen? Since July 19, the fastest answer has come from the Needham Line alert page, not a construction sign. MassDOT says the span over the tracks stays closed to cars and pedestrians "until December 2026." Drivers and walkers still detour along Belgrade Avenue to Centre Street.

The work speeds up when the trains stop. On a normal week, the contractor works daytime hours, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week. On weekends when the MBTA suspends Needham Line service, crews work 24 hours a day. In the current two-week look-ahead, that work includes installing precast bridge units and the closure pours that follow. Each dark weekend is a stretch of round-the-clock building, and the remaining ones mark how close the bridge is to done.

The shutdown weekends still on the calendar

The MBTA's Needham Line alert, last updated October 14, lists these upcoming full-line outages. Service is suspended from 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Weekend

Status

What to check

October 23–25

Listed by the MBTA

Forest Hills–South Station service is also cut on Friday, October 23 and Monday, October 26 for South Station work

November 6–8

Confirmed in the MBTA's October 16 announcement

No Forest Hills–South Station service on November 6 and 9

November 13–15

Listed on the alert page, but not in the October 16 announcement

The newer notice only lists a Forest Hills–South Station cut on November 13

December 4–6

Listed by the MBTA

Last outage currently on the list

The two MBTA sources disagree about mid-November. The Needham Line alert page shows a full outage for November 13–15. The MBTA's October 16 service announcement confirms only the November 6–8 full suspension. For November 13 it lists a narrower cut between Forest Hills and South Station. If you have plans for that weekend, check the MBTA a few days ahead.

The October 23 and 26 cuts come from a separate MBTA project. Work on the South Station Signal and Track Improvements Project takes out the inner end of the line on certain days, and those dates happen to fall on the Friday this bridge weekend starts and the Monday it ends. The MBTA's September 18 announcement lists Forest Hills–South Station cuts on October 16, 19, 23, and 26, and points riders to the Orange Line and the Red Line connection. So a weekday rider who uses South Station loses that leg during the day on Friday, October 23, hours before the full suspension begins at 11 p.m., and again on Monday, October 26.

How to get around without a train or a shuttle

None of these weekends have shuttle buses. The MBTA points West Roxbury riders to Bus Routes 35, 36, and 37 to Forest Hills, then the Orange Line toward Back Bay. Route 59 runs between Needham Junction and Newton Highlands for the Green Line D branch. Hersey has no service at all.

The MBTA also gives a figure for what this costs in time. A rider going from West Roxbury to South Station should budget at least 35 minutes on top of their usual trip. For the November 6–8 weekend, extra Route 59 buses will run later into the evening to match the hours the trains normally keep.

One more change lands right after this weekend. A new Fall/Winter Needham Line schedule takes effect Monday, October 26. Some trains will leave earlier or later than they do now, and train numbers will change. If you know your usual train by its departure time, the first weekday after the outage is a good morning to recheck it.

A weekend that stays close to home

The October 23–25 outage happens to fall on a weekend with plenty to do on Centre Street and VFW Parkway. None of it needs a train:

  1. Saturday, October 24, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: The Friends of the West Roxbury Branch Library hold a used book sale with books at $1 each. It's at the West Roxbury Branch Library, 1961 Centre Street.
  2. Sunday, October 25, noon to 6:30 p.m.: FMC Ice Sports runs Halloween Public Skating at Jim Roche Community Arena, 1275 VFW Parkway. Costumes are encouraged, but masks and costume accessories aren't allowed on the ice.

Out on the Parkway, the crew will be working through Saturday night while the library sale and the rink fill the daytime.

Halloween week, on a weekend the trains run

Halloween weekend, October 30 to November 1, is not on the MBTA's outage list. The Needham Line should run that weekend, which matters most for families heading into or out of the neighborhood. Here's the plan so far:

  • Friday, October 30, 5 to 8 p.m.: Halloween Fright Night at the Parkway Community YMCA, 1708 Centre Street, run with the Boston Police Department. It includes trick-or-treating and Halloween activities.
  • Saturday, October 31, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.: The West Roxbury Branch Library hosts a free Halloween Matinée screening of Obsession for adults 18 and older, and costumes are welcome.
  • Saturday, October 31: Parkway in Motion lists Trick or Treat on Centre Street, but the event is still pending a final permit from the City of Boston. No time has been posted yet.

The bridge has already shifted one neighborhood tradition this fall. Universal Hub reported on October 3 that the Roslindale Day parade changed its route because the closed bridge could no longer carry it to Holy Name. Anything planned for the stretch where the Parkway meets Belgrade still has to work around the detour, at least through the fall.

What December still has to answer

The December 4–6 weekend is the last outage on the MBTA's current list. Before the summer closure, MassDOT's pre-closure public meeting notice projected the bridge would be closed until "early December 2026." The current look-ahead just says December and gives no reopening day.

The reopening won't end the work, though. When the closure began, Universal Hub reported that the project includes repaving West Roxbury Parkway between the bridge and Beech Street/Anawan Avenue. During that repaving, traffic between Belgrade and Roslindale would be detoured via Beech and Anawan, and MassDOT had not set a time for it. The current MassDOT look-ahead doesn't mention the repaving phase. Beech Street is already one-way between Belgrade Avenue and the Parkway/Anawan intersection. Boston Police described that as a traffic-mitigation measure tied to the closure.

The finished project also changes the intersection. The same Universal Hub report said MassDOT plans to extend the current Centre Street bike lanes by about a block, add new traffic signals at Belgrade, and install a traffic camera so the city can adjust signal timing. MassDOT posts its two-week look-aheads on the project update page, and the current one runs through October 23.
