As you crest the hill on Rockview in Jamaica Plain, there sits a custom 1930s historic home retained by the same family since it was first built. They don’t make them like they used to! And even when they did, they didn’t make them like this.
Imagine a standard “Cape” - a clapboard clad symmetrical 1 1/2 story structure with the characteristic steep pitched roof, central chimney, side gables, and central front door - then gussy it up with high-style Colonial
Revival architectural embellishments and refinement and you start to form the makings of 48 Rockview. Most noteworthy among the exterior ornamentation are the raised decorative quoins that give a dimensionality unexpressed by the humble corner board, and the multi-paned twelve-over-twelve double hung windows typical of a home built in the Federal or Colonial period.
But it is through the pilaster adorned threshold that you will find the most striking of decorative elements- a hand-painted fresco of four distinct scenes unified under one continuous blue sky done by the hand of the owner’s grandfather on the walls of the formal dining room.
The professional fresco painter of the family was even heralded by a 1922 Globe article as “one of the most noted [muralists] in the country.” Other decorative elements that bear the muralist's mark are embossed figures found in the vestibule and above the doors and windows. In addition to the formal living room and dining room, a more utilitarian kitchen occupies the first floor. A screened in enclosed porch on the back of the home leads down to a lovely yard.
On the upper level, millwork in the form of refined moldings and trim line the stairs, doorways and windows. Built-in bookcases and drawers, as well as alcoves and nooks give personality to the three bedrooms on the second floor. A tiled bathroom with a matching pink suite are a vintage find. An attic pull-down reveals headroom and expansion potential above.
And of course, there is the location. The hill that 48 Rockview sits atop is central to all of Jamaica Plain. For starters the home is very close to both Stonybrook Station and Green Street and with that also the Southwest Corridor Park and Bike Path which extends from Forest Hills into Copley Place. If you haven’t already explored Jamaica Plain and its many shops, restaurants, community centers, and green spaces, 48 Rockview is the perfect starting point!
