No, William Prescott or Paul Revere didn’t secretively meet here during their revolutionary travels (it was built in 1988), but they were definitely in the area; Paul Revere was known to frequent the Warren Tavern, just down the hill, and Prescott, of course, heroically staved off the British on nearby Breed's Hill.

A little Bit About Charlestown

Known as the The City on a Hill, while officially incorporated into Boston’s municipality in 1874, Charlestown’s significance to U.S. History dates back to the earliest colonial days in the early 17th Century. At one point its boundaries extended as far into what is now Winchester and into the Fells.

Charlestown, in part because of its riparian separation from Boston proper, has always had its own distinct character. Once known primarily as a working class neighborhood, Charlestown’s quintessential 18th Century architecture, connection to the Navy Yard and sea port, and proximity to the Boston’s downtown, attracted developers and professionals looking outside of established neighborhoods like Back Bay and Beacon Hill.

And like many of Boston’s older neighborhoods, there is a mix of new and old buildings and businesses. Some, like the Warren Tavern, go back to revolutionary days. Others, like Monument, represent the new vanguard of Boston’s foodie scene.

There’s a lot of discover in Charlestown.

Boston Home Team Favorites

Monument Restaurant & Tavern: Quintessential neighborhood gastropub. Their brunch is what dreams are made of.

The Warren Tavern: Just a block from Bunker Hill Monument, through an unmarked door, you’ll find a cozy tavern that’s been active for over 200 years. The perfect spot for a cup of chowda, fish and chips, and some of Boston’s best $1 oysters. If it was good enough for Washington and Revere, it’s good enough for us! Oh, and on the weekend it’s poppin’ off!

Brewer’s Fork: “Truly some of the best wood-fired pizza in the city!” But don’t take Meredith’s word for it, she just used to write about pizza for a living.

The Lexington: In the newly opened Cambridge Crossing, beloved area chef Will Gilson has opened a dining trifecta. The Lexington offers rooftop dining and a striking interior for pre or post dinner cocktails. Gepetto, the Northern Italian focused dinner spot, offers crudos, homemade pastas, and more. For daytime fare, grab coffee, tea and pastries at Cafe Beatrice.

Tavern at the End of the World: Legendary. Dive on in to catch a local band, have a fortifying cup of chili, or throw back some beers with buds. One of the best late night options around - open until 2am daily. And has there ever been a better name for a bar?

The Anchor: A newer addition to the Boston Navy Yard that is a beer and wine garden, public gathering space and venue. Summer movie nights, concerts, and weekly outdoor yoga and fitness are just a few of the offerings on tap!
