Beautifully situated between Dane Street Beach and the lively and colorful Cabot/Rantoul business district of downtown Beverly, this location is truly exceptional. It's a place where the rhythm of urban and coastal life harmoniously converges. In addition to the rare combination of being a block from a vibrant downtown and a handful of tranquil beaches, this area enjoys convenient boat access, and a nearby train station linking you swiftly to both Boston and Rockport.

A plaque on the front entrance of the home identifies the original owner as Captain George Whitmarsh and dates the home to 1836.

A mere tenth of a mile from Cabot Street and a conveniently accessible half mile from the Beverly commuter rail station (MBTA), 9 Brown Street epitomizes a location of unparalleled convenience. For a charming coastal community with close proximity to a major city, look no further.

Through sliding glass, the kitchen nicely connects with the lovely backyard and patio.

Beyond the location, upon crossing through the Ionic portico it is immediately clear that 9 Brown offers a unique blend of historic preservation and modern amenities. An expansive living room, with a central fireplace, runs the entire length of the first floor and is flooded with light captured from 3 walls of windows. The formal dining room, with a fireplace of its own, has twin glass-faced China cabinets and the hardwood flooring transitions to tile as it opens into an adjoining 21st century kitchen. Corian countertops cap maple cabinetry, offering an abundance of work and storage space for the home chef. Premium appliances include a Sub Zero fridge, 6 burner gas DCS range and an additional wall oven. A walk-in pantry and eat-in dining area complete the kitchen, and a glass slider makes an easy shift to outdoor dinner on the patio. An additional sitting room affords the option of a study, office, tv or game room.

Two well-proportioned bedrooms, a shared guest bath and primary suite comprise the second floor. The suite is part of the youngest house addition and has an ante room with a fireplace, built-in bookcases, and closet. A jetted tub and separate glass enclosed shower make for a spacious and luxurious bathroom. The convenience of second floor laundry resides in the closet pass-through to the vaulted primary bedroom outfitted with skylights and a sliding glass door to the deck perched above the garden.

A dreamy proximity to the beach, downtown, and the commuter rail.

Up a flight to the third floor, await 3 additional bonus rooms. The largest is outfitted with an expansive built-in drafting table and captures natural light from skylights, making it ideal for an artists studio or work space. Window seats line the wall of another room, and all three enjoy treetop views.

There are many other updates including new windows, heating system and fence. A secondary entrance to the home is located on the driveway side. In addition to the barn-like garage, there is abundant basement storage space, and a garden shed (that wouldn’t hate to host a tea party or clubhouse meeting). Grape vines twine up the back deck and provide a shaded spot for al fresco meals.

9 Brown Street seamlessly combines historic charm with modern comfort, offering a truly exceptional living experience in the heart of Beverly.

Beverly’s Best Spots:

Places to eat, drink:

A&B burgers, City Eats Beverly, Mission Boathouse. Bonny Breads is a fantastic bakery a couple blocks away.  Delphine's on Cabot serves authentic crepes plus French sandwiches, pastries and more.

Ellis Square Social is a favorite dine-in restaurant with a rotating menu - it has the warm and friendly atmosphere of a local's haunt with great restaurant quality food.

Great coffee abounds in Beverly, but three notable shops are Atomic, Beantrust and Kid Dream Coffee Co (recently named best coffee in the state by Food & Wine magazine.)

For healthy takeout Taku Sushi Bar, and Amazing Pizza and Anmol Restaurant are great for pizza and Indian food respectively.

Joe's on a Roll for lobster rolls and fish sandwiches (these two are both seasonal).

Places to shop & play:

Dane Street Beach, Lynch Park (summer concerts), the Cabot Theater.  While Dane St Beach is well known, other excellent nearby options are Independence Park beach (a 7 min walk) and Rice's Beach (20 minute walk or a short drive to Lynch Park to park).  Rice's Beach is small, pristine and very quiet.

Sally Milligan/Snake Hill is a lovely spot for a woodland hike in town (5 min drive) or further afield is the magnificent Grass Rides at Appleton Farm, a magical and extensive hiking area.

For local stores, check out WKND Goods for small batch artisanal home goods and curated vintage clothing and accessories; Beverly Bootstraps for thrifting; Soy Much Brighter Candle Company for candles, home decor, cards, art and more.
