It’s easy to tell when winter is right around the corner. Usually, it’s when the Boston Red Sox are beating the New York Yankees in the MLB playoffs. When this is happening, you know it’s time to plan your winter ski trip.

Boston will certainly get its’ fair share of snow and you can take advantage. You don’t have to stay inside all winter long in hibernation mode. Instead, get out and enjoy some great winter fun. Here are five of the top spots for skiing near Boston for you to enjoy.

Blue Hills Ski Area


Found less than 30 minutes from Boston, Blue Hill Ski Area offers plenty of fun for skiers and winter enthusiasts. While it’s one of the best spots for hiking in the spring, summer, and winter, it becomes one of the best spots for skiing in the winter. The hill here has 309 feet of vertical drop and it’s not as steep as others, but it’s close to Boston.

Gunstock Mountain Resort

When you’re willing to take a little trip, you can drive the two hours to Gunstock Mountain Resort for great skiing. This spot won’t be as busy as some of the others on this list, but it’s not because it doesn’t have plenty to offer.

You’ll enjoy amazing views from the top of the mountain and plenty of slopes for skiing. There are three terrain parks to keep you busy and you can even enjoy winter camping here.

Ragged Mountain

About two hours from Boston, Ragged Mountain offers a Central New Hampshire spot for skiing. This spot offers 57 total trails to choose from and it’s not crowded like some of the other spots for skiing near Boston. They offer three terrain parks and plenty more to enjoy.

Mount Sunapee

Maybe the most popular spot for skiing on the list, Mount Sunapee is close to the border of New Hampshire and Vermont. It’s the place for medium difficulty runs, also called Blue Square. They also offer Black Diamonds for experts and even some Green Circles for beginners. The best part, it’s less than two hours from Boston.

Bretton Woods

While it’s not the most popular in New England, Bretton Woods may be the best choice for skiing near Boston. The lines for the lifts won’t be so bad and the conditions won’t be so icy or windy. This is the largest ski area in New Hampshire and about two-and-a-half hours from Boston. Enjoy plenty of diverse terrain with something for everybody here.

Winter doesn’t have to be a drag in Boston. Whether you already know how to ski or you’d love to learn, there are plenty of opportunities near Boston for skiing. Even if you don’t have any interest in skiing, many of the top ski areas and resorts offer other winter activities you can enjoy. If nothing else, you can enjoy the amazing views and cuddle around the fire in your rustic cabin for a weekend away from the city.
